As we
are a long way (North) West in France, and half-way along Brittany, we
normally recommend Brittany Ferries Portsmouth - St Malo crossing. The
near-Motorway standard network improves at an amazing rate, and we are
now about 1 1/2 hours from St Malo, even keeping to the speed limits (rigorously
observed by the Gendarmes at least !)
Also with a longer fast drive,
Porstsmouth- Caen and using the 2 new pieces of the A84 (toll-free) can get
you here in about 3hours. Plymouth - Roscoff is also useful if you are
starting from the West or Midlands/ north of Britain and the drivr is about 2
hours.FLIGHT NEWS ! www. RyanAir.com are doing Stansted - Dinard
(50 min +1.5 hr drive), often very cheaply. You need to subscribe on those pages
to get "last minute" offers, which can be very cheap (once went for 2p
one-way!) - this still leaves the question of the remainder of the journey
but this is just feasible by Rail/ coach.
The rail service is
fractionally better
from Roscoff. Intrepid rail buffs have made it via Eurostar via Vannes or St
Brieuc. Try www.ter-sncf.com eg
ST-MALO-35 to PONTIVY. This Autumn's flights are getting in to Dinard at 1310;
Train/ coach from St Malo at 1459 could get you to Pontivy at 1848 and costs
around 25 euros (you must pre-book any TGV sections)
Other carriers include Air France (Heathrow -Paris, Paris-Vannes etc)
Hire car : discounts via Ryanair can make it around
£100 for 5-7 days.
A lift could be arranged for our nearest and dearest friends
!!
Of course you
may wish to dawdle on the D-roads (numbered within each Departement, they
can therefore amusingly change number mid-way between towns, but most of the
longer distance ones have been re-numbered in the 700 series eg D766 which goes
to Dinard Airport.
Recommended for
a long weekend is to take the Wednesday night PT-St M crossing which arrives
at 8am French time, and go to the lovely Dinan market on Thursday morning.
Apart from a hot Saucisse Sandwich for breakfast, you can stock up on fabulous
cheeses, breads, exotic mushrooms and everyday (for France !) vegetables
to last for your first couple of days at our cottage.
It's worth reminding
you that it is normal for shops INCLUDING food shops to shut for lunch
at 12 noon or soon after, and so if you dawdle over-much on the way to
us, you may be forced to eat out immediately
on arrival !
